Its fuzzy, warm and cozy, not to mention silky and luxurious!
It’s a child’s blanky. Not just any child, but my beautiful niece's. Since she was just a baby, she has loved the baby blankets that are minky on one side and satin on the other. Let’s face it, we would all love to sleep with a blanky like this. Now that she is a big girl she wanted one to cover her entire bed. Where to find such a thing? You can’t.
You can, however, call your seamstress aunt to make one. This is exactly what her parents did.
My now 6 year old niece was taken to Fabricland where she chose the fabrics and colours she wanted, which were (quite adorably) pink and pink. I excepted nothing less from the little princess. They brought the fabric to me and after snuggling with it for just a moment (it’s so soft) I got to work. I had made several of the smaller blankets for her but this was on a whole other scale.
While putting this blanket together there is one thing I learned; since I don’t work with minky fabric often, I’ve only made a few little blankies, I didn’t realize that is has a lot of give. My first attempt to put a border of minky around the satin left the satin very bunchy. I had no idea how much the minky fabric would “grow” as it was sewn. It took me a second to figure out what I did and quickly thought of a solution. My idea was then to sew with the satin so it would work as a stabilizer. It worked like a charm and I was a able to finish without any more bunching.
After stitching the two sides together I bound it in satin. To finish off her new luxurious bed, made a satin pillowcase.
It was such a fun and personal project and the fact that my neice is in love with it makes it that much better.
