This Week's Design Project

One of my goals this year is to design and produce one new garment per week, to stock my shop and Etsy store. It will also give me the opportunity to develop my drafting skills. It is always important to work on your craft and expand your knowledge.  Some weeks I’m hoping to do more and others none at all but I’m hoping this will balance out to 52 new designs this year. It’s quite the task but I’ll give it a shot.

This week it’s my version of the harem pant. Over the last year the harem pant has made a comeback. When the slim pant made a lasting statement, designers started playing with volume in the hip area.  They varied from dressier trousers to sweatpants.

My version is a dressier pant but in a fabric that can be dressed down as well. While most harem pants are gathered at the waist, I did a wide waistband that sits on the hip and inverted pleats just in the front for some fullness that wouldn't add bulk, but lay flat against the body.  Also most have a very low crotch depth, which IMHO (in my humble opinion) can look a little "hammer time". MC hammer had his moment in his lamé pants and we are grateful for the memories but I prefer fashion moments like that to be left in the era they belong. So with that in mind I made mine fitted with just enough volume to add interest while keeping the look classy.

These you could wear 100 times in so many ways. Tuck in a blouse; wear with a fitted jacket or cardi, a fitted t shirt or tank with a chain belt slug on the hips. Whatever your style is, the Harem Pant is a great addition to your closet.  This is one piece I plan on making for myself. OK, I plan on making them all for myself. Honestly, if I wouldn't wear it myself, I wouldn't have designed it in the first place.
